Kumaraswamy Nanthakumar, MD

Dr. Nanthakumar is a Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto. In addition he is the Director of Heart Rhythm Disorders at University Health Network, a Senior Scientist, Toronto General Hospital Research Institute (TGHRI), Active Staff, Toronto General Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital and Graduate Appointment at Institute of Medical Science at University of Toronto.
He is a Clinical Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist. After receiving his MD at the University of Toronto, he completed his training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Toronto. He subsequently completed his cardiac electrophysiology training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he studied the mechanisms of cardiac fibrillation. His clinical expertise is focused on devices in heart failure and performing catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia and supra ventricular tachycardia. Dr. Nanthakumar received the Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Innovation, as well as the Clinician Scientist Award from the Canadian Institute of Health Research. He has also been awarded Career Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and holds several patents related to his research interest. His research program was funded by federal granting agency CIHR and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Professor Nanthakumar's key research interests include the mechanisms of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation, novel signal processing methodology and atypical ion channel targets for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias.
